Reply Martin says November 8, 2012 at 06:13 Thanks for the advice, it solved my problem. the tell tale sign that this is the problem with a phone is when the headphones are plugged in they don't sit flush against the phone body. Obviously they don't work perfectly in my Nexus 4, since Android devices uses a different way of reading volume up/down buttons. I should have recognized all of the issues were connected to the loss of contact to the control ring.

I figured out the issue was from the Iphone when my new headset was not working either.
