Try creating another normal user account temporarily, and see what behaviour you get there. OK now to let go of button, enter the pairing code, and it shoud show "Connected" to the right of the Apple Keyboard device on list. Whilst Apple obviously make their own battery charger, and therefore condone the use of rechargeable, there has always been an issue with power quality from rechargeable batteries. I hope this helps.
