The heater core hoses are located under the battery tray, just to the right of the battery. The FSM mentions that you should remove the drain plug from the waterpump when draining the coolant. By the way, even you had to take off the bumper (which you don't) , that only adds another 5 minutes: its 2 bolts and a chiropractic maneuver and voila! I did have some maintenance that I knew needed done anyhow (timing belt, water pump, thermostat, coolant temp sensor, etc...) so I do not consider the money spent on that as For those that would like to take things a step further, several people (including myself) have used CLR to help clean out the heater core. The dealer will most commonly claim the cause of no / low heat is a bad heater core, or a bad thermostat. The bad news: I flushed the core, since I was in there, and it's got green/brown goo for coolant (despite all VW dealer service records when I bought it.) So I decided to start with the CLR flush method, and did indeed get some minor flakes and stuff out. At idle I get lukewarm air at best. as far as the blower motor goes.
